WATERFALL
When you play a “RISA in the Round” concert for the Rhode Island Songwriters’ Association, part of the deal is that you have to write a song based on a prompt from last month’s gathering. The prompt was “slippery slope.” I had a plan for the song. It had a different plan. I had enough sense to go along for the ride.
Back in the day daddy asked me, "Son,
what you wanna do with your life?
You need a plan man, or you’ll spend your days dancing on the edge of a knife.
Find the path and follow it if you wanna do more than survive."
But I didn’t have an answer he’d understand
so I did my best to do what he said
but there’s another voice livin’ in my head and it says…
Give yourself to the waterfall, just see where it goes
The water’s sayin’ something you need to know
Give yourself to the waterfall, you’re gonna like the ride
You might be terrified, but it’ll force you to fly
So I went to school and got a degree and wrote a resume
Tried hard to be on time and be a good little rat in the race
Monday and Friday, rinse and repeat, is this what it takes to get paid?
but I couldn’t find an answer that made any sense
I tried my best to do what they said
but there’s another voice livin’ in my head and it says…
Give yourself to the waterfall, just see where it goes
The water’s sayin’ something you need to know
Give yourself to the waterfall, ‘cuz gravity’s a hell of a guide
You might be terrified, but it’ll force you to fly
It’s like walkin’ on a rainy riverbank, all muddy and slick
A quick slip and a sudden trip, and babe, you’re going in…so I say…
Give yourself to the waterfall, just see where it goes
The water’s sayin’ something you need to know
Give yourself to the waterfall, the cold’ll let you know you’re alive
You might be terrified, but it’ll force you to fly
You might be terrified, but it’ll force you to fly
It’ll force you to fly
