BIRD IN A CAGE
They’re deporting U.S. citizen now—children. I can’t stop imagining what it would be like to have masked, armed men invade my home, rip my family apart, and ship me to some random country…and the beauty of everything you can see on your first time on an airplane.
She was born in Missourah, where the Mississippi curves and the corn grows straight
her daddy’s from the next town over, her mama comes from far away
Her favorite part of school is recess – she’s the undisputed queen of skipping rope
and Spanish class is super-easy, ‘cuz at home she speaks both
then men with guns came through the door
and drove her to the airport
She’s never seen so much of the world, before
greens and blues and open plains
She’s flying through the sky
like a bird… a bird in a cage
Policemen catch the bad guys, she asks what they did wrong, but they won’t say
her little sister can’t stop crying, mama wipes the tears away
She asks who’ll feed her rabbit, she asks when they can go back home
She asks why daddy couldn’t join them , she ain’t ever felt this much alone
men with guns came through the door
and drove her to the airport
She’s never seen so much of the world, before
greens and blues and open plains
She’s flying through the sky
like a bird… a bird in a cage
When you look up in the sky
and a jet plane’s streaking by
that’s her going away
can you see her wave?
She’s never seen so much of the world, before
greens and blues and open plains
She’s flying through the sky
like a bird… a bird in a cage
a bird in a cage
a bird in a cage
